St. Ignatius Claimed Another Division I Title

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

For the 11th time in twelve state title appearances, St. Ignatius left the field with the Division I championship trophy.

The Wildcats won a state record 11th state title Saturday with a 34-13 win over Pickerington Central.  For the first time in Division I history, the game featured two teams with two losses.

St. Ignatius jumped-out to a 20-0 lead, but two scores by Pickerington Central closed the gap to 20-13 in the second quarter.  After that, it was all Wildcats.

The only championship game that St. Ignatius lost was back in 1996.

Maty Mauk's High School Career Ends in Loss in State Title Game

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

When I talked with Kenton head coach Mike Mauk and his son Maty in July, all the two could talk about was winning a state championship, not the passing records Maty was on-the-brink of breaking.

Maty got all the record, but not the state title.

Norwayne scored a touchdown with 31 seconds to go in the game to capture Ohio's Division IV championship with a heart-stopping 48-42 win.

Mauk tried to bring his team back with only a half minute to go, but he threw an interception at the goal-line on the last play of his high school career.

The recently-named 2011 Ohio Mr. Football finished his career completing 27-of-50 passes for 421 yards and five touchdowns.  The Missouri-bound Mauk also carried the ball 22 times for 50 yards and a touchdown.

The teams combined for six touchdowns in the fourth quarter and 966 yards in total offense.

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

Trotwood-Madison exchanged its 2010 silver medal for a gold one in 2011.

The Rams beat Avon 42-28 Friday to win the Division II state title.  It was the first-ever state title for Trotwood-Madison, which also finished runner-up in 1981.

The Rams were led by junior running back Israel Green, who broke four individual sate championship records.  Green set an all divisions record for most touchdowns in a game (6), most rushing touchdowns (6) and most points (36); he also set a Division II record for most yards rushing with 326.

When it comes to the postseason, Cardinal Mooney is tough to beat.

Kirtland is a perfect 1-0 after its first Ohio state football championship game appearance.

Kirtland beat Coldwater 28-7 Friday to win the state's Division V state title.  The Hornets used a strong defense throughout its playoff run.  In five playoff games, Kirtland allowed only 29 points.

On offense in the championship game, the Hornets rushed for 410 yards with running back Christian Hauber leading the way with 196 yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns.  Hauber's fellow running back Damon Washington gained 147 yards and scored two TDs.
